Raw Report From the Beatific Boondocks of the Northwest | Raw Spirit Community News

Raw, Rare, and Resplendent Wonder You,

Thank you for understanding. Betwixt glaciers and peaks in the Rockies and Cascades, I’ve been on a writer’s retreat – retreating from writing – to enjoy the fullness of life.

Unplugged from civilization, I’ve discovered a previously overlooked gold nugget of health and happiness: when it comes to taking a nap, this summer, it has been my greatest achievement to no longer procrastinate. I have rediscovered sleep and hope you do too. Ameliorating one’s own health is one of the most rewarding expressions of thanksgiving. May we extol every effort exerted toward catching a nap, dream, stream, or sunbeam.

Raw Report from the Rockies: At Montana’s Trading Post Restaurant, when asked if they have anything raw, the waiter replied, “Yes, we have rawhide.”

Introducing zephyrvesence. Due to an absence of detectable industry in the Western States, including virtually no sign of smokestacks (have you noticed?) for decades, the air may be cleaner now in Montana, Idaho and the wilds of Washington, than it has been in seven generations. We can actually smell the air, which is, in this case, good.

Ceaseless phantasmagorical fragrances delight the nasal palate. Our happy, fluting nostrils stop us gladly in our tracks every few feet to detect the newest mystery flower, lichen, soil, animal, trunk or mushroom bursting with fragrances, uplifting floral bouquets of wafting heady aromas accented with moist pine needles, cedar bark, ponderosa ‘vanilla’. The Rockies and Cascades comprise a breatharian paradise, a dreamlike awakening to any latent sense of smell, making me realize that in erstwhile eons, the nose was purposely placed in it’s prominent position, rightly so as royalty.

Beside steady logging well-hidden from the roads, the only significant income in this ecstatic economy is eco-tourism. Guides come in an assortment of flavors offering butterfly safaris to rock climbing, SUP (Stand Up Board) lessons to spelunking, megafauna photography hikes to summer bicycle resorts, which in the winters now feature the new sport of snow bicycling.

FORAGING is pleasurably plentifully easy in the Great Northwest with little competition. Though 25,000 bears do roam at home in Washington state, for example, it is rare to spot these fashionably-furry

mammals, which leaves the delectable majority of berries to you and me. Huckleberries are the original, wild, dark inspiration of today’s domesticated blueberries. We are having a berry good time nibbling ruby thimbleberries, raspberries, black berries, logan berries, and currants that add sweet succulence to our ready grins.

I recommend hiking vigorously for half days along blooming paths amidst snowy summits and spilling waterfalls or anywhere you naturally can. We sip while we swim from the pristine streams and lakes so clean that every pebble seems polished beneath the surface.

However, upon arriving at Dicky Lake, I pronounced that I wouldn’t swim in it.
“Why not?”, pondered Johnny.
“I don’t want to risk getting pregnant.” Hee hee.

The beauty along the Continental Divide is unparalleled. We awoke on my birthday pre-dawn to the howling of wolves, eerily, powerfully echoing off the mountains on either side of the lake. Less than 1 out of 10,000 living Americans has heard the strange, ancient, forgotten song of a wolf pack howling in the wilderness in the dark of night. After nearly a century of absence, there are now merely ten wolf packs in Washington State today. To hear their song is a rare and unforgettable gift.

slow down and the world slows down with us

slowing down
serenely
gladly
gratefully
watching the grass laugh
lanky stretching bending
golding grasses glow and
waver in the dawdling wind
yawning on my back
feeling free so deliciously
nothing to do
but be right here
gaze-grinning into the horizon
the vast craggy horizon
sunblissed blast
poignantly punctuates
strings of jagged peaks
pink-tipped snow
alpen glow
while midmeadow
down slurpy snow slopes below
celebrating that nobody knows me
feeling schedule free
nothing to do
nowhere to go
