After touring through an extreme drought in New Mexico, we arrived like grateful explorers on our nature-loving knees into the luxuriantly-green arms of southwest Colorado. In and in between Durango, Ouray, Telluride, Ridgway, Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge, Crestone and Boulder, we realize that we are not the only ones whose primary form of worship is Nature.
Alpine Colorado surrounds and embraces hikers, kayakers and bikers with so much beauty, that it fairly kisses you in the eyes and hugs your heart around each turn in the floribundant trail.
One may wonder how many photos can one iphone take in a day before perception lightens so that we realize it’s about absorbing the beauty directly, embracing it so fully with grateful, receptive eyes that somehow this indescribable beauty may be transmitted down mountain, down the road in more desolate circumstances, via that extra glad glint in your eye accompanied by wildly-flowering, glacier-sparkling smiles punctuated with zephyr-esque giggles born of rocky mountain highs.
Blissing forth through verdant snow-blessed Rockies is a ceaseless rainbow-meadowed, wildlife-opulent, waterfalling, lusciously laked, brilliant green raw-vegan dream!
Kayaking the savage rivers, baptizing ourselves in streams so cold and clean we drink while we dip, hiking amidst snow-sparkling summits, gazing long into the gloaming sun glows reflecting upon alpine lakes and glacial tarns, singing to and dancing through high wildly-flowering meadows amidst marmots, birds, bears, pica, deer and moose, we graze.
We graze on trailside dandelions, yarrow, wild roses, primroses, mountain lettuce, plantain, horsetail, dock, blue flax, wild geranium, spearmint and oodles of other delicious plants whose names we know not, while chewing on grasses.
This is what’s on the menu in the high country should you wonder what we will dine upon next time I invite you out to lunch. Meanwhile, wild blackberries, raspberries, thimbleberries, boysenberries, blueberries, strawberries and gooseberries, etc, are ripening.

Thanks also to amazing Katrina Blair (and Hiroki) of Durango, Colorado’s www.TurtleLakeRefuge.org and Farm as well as Agnieska Spuzak who is about to host us in Boulder.
Katrina Blair reminded us to drink directly out of (pristine, clean, high, briskly-flowing, un-trafficked) mountain streams, that raw vegans don’t get sick the way other folks do because we are not housing putrified matter that attracts disease in the dark recesses of our digestive tracts.
For decades as a hiking guide, my primary source of hydration was mountain streams. I never became sick. I didn’t gulp overconfidently, but instead observed the quality of the water, respectfully revered and thanked the water, then sipped gingerly and carefully here and there.
Katrina enjoys ten-day hikes up in the Rocky Mountains above her farm without bringing any food at all. This reminds me of how I used to roam for many years through remote wildernesses, totally at home. Thanks to my philanthropy project, the Raw Spirit Festival, which required that I come down from the mountain tops, now that the festival is in “heavenly hiatus”, it feels euphoric to be free at home, walking simply for the sake of walking high up in these beautiful mountains.
10% of the village of Crestone, population 97, came out to join us – a pretty good showing for only two days notice.
